How To Be An
Armchair Tourist.

a binaural trip to the mall

This is one of the most amazing cdroms I've ever heard and it was made using a unique technology called Binaural Recording.

Why is this cool? It's recorded using microphones mounted in the ear canals of the person recording the event. The end result is simply the most life like and realistic recording technique ever. It's Just Like Being There !!! You can't get any more perfect an audio recording than this. period....

IT'S REAL LIFE - UNSCRIPTED!

Binaural Recordings are a popular way to drift off to far locations and add the inner mind creative element of reading a book, as opposed the brain dead act of watching a video. Binaural producers have created trips to Europe, Exotic Islands, Remote Locations, Nature, you name it! Imagine - Listening to the streets of Paris, or New York City, New Orleans, Spring Break, and on and on!

What Is Binaural Recording? I'm glad you asked ... Binaural recording is more than standard stereo recording where you would place 2 microphones in standard locations - one to record LEFT and one to record RIGHT. Binaural microphones are placed on a form resembling a head, or a real human head in the case of this recording, in the same area as the human ear. But that's not all. In order to truly achieve locational 3D sound information, the microphones must be worn near the ear canal. Your ears are shaped like they are for a reason - to help us locate the source of sound. Minute echo location occurs when sound 'bounces' off of the outer ear. Sounds from beneath us and to the right are reflected differently then, say, sounds that come from above and left. The physical shape of the ear causes this subtle, yet critical echo system to provide us with 3D audible clues as to the location of objects we here. This is one of the reasons humans have survived - they heard where the predators were and could run the opposite way! Standard stereo recordings simply cannot reproduce the echo location information and cannot provide the depth and realism of binaural recording.

Is Binaural some new technology? NO - It's been around since at least the 1920's when Harvey Fletcher joined the Research Division of Western Electric Engineering and published his studies on human hearing. And The human body has been listening binaurally for as long as humans have had ears!

Typical stereo only records left and right. Binaural records left, right, up, down, front, and back. That's why binaural is so cool! Listen to this CD and you'll truly believe YOU ARE THERE. There is no other way to put it. And no other recording technique comes even close!

In order to hear the binaural recording properly you must wear headphones. Since the sound was recorded at the ear, it must be played back from the same location. When playing binaural recordings from speakers you simply cannot achieve 3 dimensional impressions - only left and right.

What About Surround Sound??? Surround sound doesn't come close - it's missing the essential microphone positioning that differentiates binaural recording from anything else. Surround Sound is not natural - it's a subset of real life audio positioning and, in most cases, is quite exaggerated to achieve it's effect. Yes, surround sound does sound good - but binaural is better!

Listen To A Sample - and be sure to WEAR HEADPHONES !!!!!
